On August 23rd Safe Space Tanzania visited Juma Island Primary School which is found in the island known as Kisiwa cha Juma (Juma Island), the main aim of this visit was to see how the organization can compliment the government efforts in creating safe and favorable learning environment for the children in the island.
Juma Island is an island found in the Lake Victoria at Katunguru Ward, Sengerema District, Mwanza Region with an approximate of about 15,000 people. The main residence of this area are small fishers who are living in the margin of poverty. There is only one primary school with 700 children with only 8 teachers. Students are studying in a very delapited classrooms, they are congested, they are seating four in one desk and others are seating down, those who were late in the enrollment are seating down for the rest of their studies in the year.
More over since it’s establishment no female teacher has ever been sent to work there.
