Project Summery.
As evidenced by statistics, Tanzania Young women’s participation in national political processes is still minimal; and it is severely hampered by their position and role within clan structures which is male dominant and lack of adequate institutional support, information and engagement.
Patriarchal structure in the leadership system, it is well known that the political structure in Tanzania starts from the Local Government Authorities whereas men comprises 95% of the LGAs leadership, and Young People rarely contest for the positions in that level believing that these are the for village elders, and therefore end up losing an opportunity to influence decision at the community level, and hence all decision made under this level become more of male friendly.
lack of support for young women who want to assume leadership roles, Young Women lack experienced people to hold their hands to unlock their leadership potentials, the impact of societal expectations and stereotypes, insecurity and gender based violence are concerns that often impact young women’s political ambitions, hence this project to make sure that Young Women are participating in the election without fear and free from gender based violence.
As a determinant of political involvement in the country, many of the young people feel isolated and even excluded from the political system which tends to be ‘self-reproduced and often self-serving.’ these sentiments arise since young people are often considered to be immature and financially dependent on their parents, so they are not often treated as equal members of the planning process and power arrangements, hence Safe Space will make them feel as a whole and able bodied people to bring changes in the community
A majority of political parties in Tanzania are largely dominated by men, and as vehicles to political offices, often decides who will be listed on the ballot and in what capacity, hence as Young Women we need full equipped Young Women ready to contest and kind of a movement to note those issues and take immediate actions.
